What is Camping?

By definition “camping” is done outdoors. It is usually away from urban areas where tents or trailers can be placed for a temporary residence while one pursues activities that provide them enjoyment.

This definition doesn’t really address the finer points of the experience though does it? There is a big difference between backpacking a trail, pitching a tent in a remote mountain meadow, sitting on a log eating rehydrated food, drinking water you filtered from a puddle, and soaking in the wonder of nature VS parking your 45 ft. fully loaded 1 and a 1/2 bath motorhome complete with washer/ dryer, wine fridge, electric fireplace and 4 televisions in a RV resort on the Gulf. Suffice it to say that camping is different for everyone.

It is my view that there are essentially:

5 Types of Camping:

  1. Wilderness camping pursued for the outdoor nature experience that can generally be obtained while visiting provincial, national or state parks.Marten River Provincial Park
  2. Destination camping -where you go for a specific activity like Disney World, or the infield at the Pocono Raceway.
  3. Lodging Only camping -where you park your accommodations and pursue activities that are outside of the campground such as attending the Calgary Stampede, or day tripping into Niagara Falls to sightsee.Four Mile Creek State Park
  4. Seasonal camping-where you usually have a more permanent trailer that is parked on a site, generally in a privately owned campground, and you visit it frequently, much like you would a cottage.
  5.  Extended Stay camping which, while in some ways similar to “Seasonal”, it is usually the big RVs rather than a more permanently established trailer. “Extended Stay” is typically the type of camping that the Snowbirds do. Fleeing the cold to the warmer regions for the season.

So if camping is so different to so many people; what about it is the same? Camping is the part where you set up your accommodations, but the question is more  “why do you camp?” instead of “where do you camp?”.

Why Camp?

  • decompress from your hectic life.
  • sightsee.
  • pursue a hobby,
  • bond with friends and family.

Central to the camping experience is the activities that you partake in, while in your temporary residence.

This site is dedicated to those activities and how to get the most from the entire camping experience- Welcome!
