Description
A maple leaf in autumn shades of red, orange, amber and brown stained glass. All pieces are hand cut and assembled using the Tiffany copper foil method and hang from an authentic beaver stick.
The leaf is hanging from a decorative chain that incorporates a Canadian one-cent piece (penny). Production of the penny ceased in May 2012, and the Royal Canadian Mint ceased distribution of them as of February 4, 2013. The penny depicts 2 maple leaves on a branch and was the inspiration for this piece.
The branch that the stained glass maple leave hangs from is an authentic beaver stick collected naturally while kayaking on a northern Ontario lake where beaver populations are abundant. Beavers mostly eat the inner bark of trees along with the bark and leaves. If you watch a beaver eating a twig, they hold it like a piece of corn-on-the-cob, turning and nibbling it. Look closely at the stick; you will see the groove marks and striations made by the beaver’s teeth.
